Caice ‘Continuous Line’ Acoustic Louvre system makes ideal roof screen for design studio
Converting an old residential building into a design studio in Kentish Town, London our client realised that there was minimal space to install the air conditioning and power generation equipment needed for its new use.
The plant room was designed to have the roof removed
New condenser units, heat pumps and AHUs installed, and the roof replaced with Caice high performance acoustic louvres (CS600) with front fix knife bracket installation system supported with steelwork by others. The original roof and asbestos were removed by a separate contractor.
The result is an aesthetically pleasing modern style roof, 8m high from finished floor level, with 140m2 of continuous line acoustic louvres and a plant room which operates to the highest level. Safely and professionally installed on time.
This site presented an unusual set of challenges
We overcame the many specific difficulties to this site and carefully managed this project all the way from site survey, through the design stages to installation.
Site specific training to keep everyone as safe as possible
This ensured that all operatives maintained a safe working method for accessing the outside of the roof. A site specific induction for working with asbestos was also required because of the previous removal of the asbestos roof.
Limited access to site and plant room
Constraints on site were particularly tight and access to the installation itself was difficult, especially towards the apex of the roof. So we used a super genie lift to allow ease of lifting with multiple men with multiple towers inside and additional labour outside.
Installation sequencing was crucial
Sequencing of the installation of the CS600 Acoustic Louvres (x2 SS300 Acoustic Louvres back to back) was an issue with one module having bird mesh, so no bolts could be fixed through the rear of the louvre. The outer louvre module had to be installed using bolted connections and the internal modules were installed using a mixture of bolts and tek screws due to limited access through the louvre blades.
Delivery sequencing to a strict time plan
Six articulated vehicles were needed to deliver 140m2 of Acoustic Louvres. But with minimal storage capacity on site we needed specific louvres delivered to a strict time plan so installation could be completed safely and smoothly.
Safe and professional installation on time
We provided access for installation and site specific training because access was very tight, and only possible with a mobile tower. All operatives on the external face were harnessed in for safety, and 4 installers were required on site to lift and hold the modules while they were bolted through to the knife brackets. Coping trims were designed to be internally fixed due to the acoustic louvres gradually preventing access to the apex of the roof.
